“Geographies of Feeling”

Interview: Dai Guangyu

On August 8, 2023, Dr. Sophia Kidd invited Dai Guangyu, “Geographies of Feeling” featured artist, to share the background and understanding of the creation of the works exhibited in the exhibition, Wang Wei’s VillaMy Mother and Data Base of Forbidden Words. From childhood memories to his art career, the ever-changing time and space have become the materials of “perception”, providing Dai Guangyu with rich nourishment for his creation.

Dai Guangyu felt frustrated and regretful that all those things that had made an impact on the region and history had disappeared in an instant, so he composed Wang Wei’s Villa to ease those emotions.

The nostalgia and praise for his mother extends to his artworks, and he hopes that artistic creation can reach a poetic height from the level of language. “Real art is not fashion, fashion can only be found in everyday life.” It’s an aesthetic standard Dai admired. In this way, My Mother is not only a portrait, but also a presentation of the quest for poetic beauty.
